In the opening scene, Senator Edward Gale is hosting a fundraising and garden party at his estate outside Washington. His daughter, Eva, intrudes on the party and after condemning her father loudly to the assembled guests, shoots him several times (without seriously wounding him) before being apprehended by security and removed from the scene.

In a Washington park, Liam and Renee are playing 3D chess at an outdoor table and waiting to rendezvous with Urich Hubble, the President's advisor. A hologram (Hubble) appears next to their table wearing the physical appearance of a very proper English nanny and pushing a perambulator. Hubble, whose voice is also disguised, comments on the game in progress, then briefs Liam and Renee on recent events at Senator Gale's garden party, telling them also of the suspected abduction of the senator's daughter and alerting them to her possible Kryss abuse. Liam and Renee are shocked, because they believed they had destroyed the only Kryss facility in existence (on earth) several months previously.

Liam learns what institution Senator Gale's daughter has been placed in, and goes to the hospital to interrogate her, posing as an old friend to get past the security people posted outside her room. Eva tells Liam about her father's dealings with the Taelons, and that he is the cause of all her problems. Liam attempts to soothe Eva by telling her that he knows just how it feels to have a father (Sandoval) whom one cannot trust. Eva experiences a flash back, and we see her being abducted along with other members of what appears to be a group of Resistance members. Eva is able to recall the structure in which she was held and at Liam's urgent request, she sketches it on a sheet of paper for him.

Back at Augur's abode (which appears to have become Liam's home in Augur's absence) Liam and Renee examine the sheet of paper on which Eva made her sketch. Renee identifies the sketch as the old Freedom space station and shows Liam a photo of it on a computer screen. She tells Liam that the space station has been sold to Mikael Federov, the enterprising Russian entrepreneur from the Season III finale, "Arrival", and she says that Federov has opened a state-of-the-art Volunteer training facility on the station. (Renee also tells Liam that bidding for the station was very competitive, which leads one to think that Doors International must have been among the original bidders.) Liam and Renee agree that the space station would be the perfect place to run an illegal Kryss manufacturing facility. At this point, Da'an's words from the end of the episode "The Fields" are echoed, where Da'an said, "We are no longer manufacturing Kryss on earth."

Renee returns to the space station, ostensibly to meet Federov, but her real purpose is to see what she can discover about Kryss manufacture on the station and what Federov is really up to. Her talk with Federov is interrupted when it is announced that a shuttle bearing an important passenger has docked at the station, and Federov excuses himself, leaving Renee alone. When he leaves the secure chamber where they were conversing, Renee trains her global on Federov departing and is able to capture his personal security code combination, which permits Federov free access on the space station.

After he leaves Renee, Federov retrieves a vial of Kryss from a concealed compartment and exchanges it with a mysterious black robed and hooded figure for an undisclosed amount of gold. The figure, obviously a Taelon, absorbs the Kryss through the palm of his/her hand.

Back at Liam/Augur's abode, Renee tells Liam about Federov's curious and guarded behavior, including how he left her alone to meet the docking shuttle and its undisclosed passenger. They discuss the possibility that Federov is running an illegal Kryss facility on the space station. Liam decides to return to the hospital to verify Eva's story, while Renee makes plans to infiltrate the space station disguised as a Volunteer named Dearborn from Boise.

Liam uses an ID portal to enter the fringes and locate Street, who is obviously pleased to see him. He tells her that he e-mailed her some time ago, and remarks that she never replied. Street is non-committal, and Liam asks her if it is about money, which she denies, remarking to him pointedly, "nice jacket". Taking the hint, Liam removes his black leather jacket (under which he is wearing a black mesh shirt) and gives it to Street who then gives him the information she has been able to acquire about the Resistance cell with which Eva was traveling at the time she was abducted. When she finishes, Street looks at Liam and remarks, "nice shirt" to which Liam replies rather heatedly that he is not taking his shirt off, then leaves. As Liam leaves, Street smiles and remarks to herself, "You can't blame a girl for trying."

At Eva's hospital room, Liam's arrival is announced. Liam enters the room and after a long and difficult conversation (for Eva) he is able to confirm her story about having been abducted, taken to the space station, and used to manufacture Kryss for the Taelons. She shows Liam the scar left by the Kryss extraction procedure (a scar which both Liam and Renee also have from their time on the earthly Kryss farm). The medical staff nearby notice Eva's distress and alert security who forcibly remove Liam from Eva's room and subdue Eva, using a head device similar to the one placed on Liam by Dr. Parks in the Season II episode, "Sleepers".

Liam goes to Senator Gale's estate to confront him about his support for the sale of the space station to Federov and his knowledge concerning the possibility that an illegal Kryss facility being run on the space station. Senator Gale is unrepentant, saying that maintaining the defunct space station was costing the taxpayers a fortune and that he was proud to be a part of selling it. He also denies any knowledge of a Kryss farm being run on the station and states that his only concern is for his daughter's well being.

At the Freedom space station, Renee has come aboard as a Volunteer named Joan Dearborne from Boise. After a bit of quiet searching, she is able to locate and observe the Kryss manufacturing facility. A little later, she follows Federov surreptitiously down a corridor and discovers him in his secret compartment, exchanging a vial of Kryss with a dark robed and hooded figure who is now revealed to us as a perspiring and obviously Kryss addicted Da'an. Renee inadvertently makes a noise and Federov reacts, suddenly aware that he and Da'an are being observed. Renee is able to escape the space station through an ID portal, but not before wounding a Volunteer and exchanging fire with security forces on the station.

Back at Augur's abode, Renee shows her surveillance footage to Liam, including Da'an's purchase of the Kryss. Liam is shocked and resolves to confront Da'an directly.

Liam goes to the embassy to confront Da'an, and Da'an reaction to Liam's appearance is both irrational and paranoid. It appears that Da'an is in need of a dosage of Kryss, and his veneer of self control is thin. Liam makes a pretense of leaving Da'an's chamber, but waits until Da'an begins to absorb his dosage of Kryss and returns to the room. Da'an collapses and Liam communicates Renee on his global, asking her to contact Dr. Curzon.

On the space station, Federov is visited by Sandoval who is not happy because Kryss production is down, and suspects that Federov is holding back part of the production. He points out that the abduction and enslavery of a Senator's daughter was a huge mistake. Federov reveals that he is having Eva watched, and thinks that it may be necessary to remove her if she becomes a threat.

At the hospital, Eva is being monitored by the nurse who is Federov's "plant". The nurse hears a suspicious noise and goes to Eva's room to investigate it. She is ambushed by Eva who places the head device on her, rendering her immobile. Eva escapes from the hospital and flees, moving into the fringes, being pursued by a small crew of Federov's operatives.

Liam and Renee discover that Eva has escaped and discover that she has fled to the fringes. They contact Street for assistance, pursue Street and are able to locate her (with the help of Street), just as Federov's operatives are closing in.

Liam goes to the embassy to meet Da'an, who tries to make light of his collapse from over indulgence in Kryss, insisting that Liam was mistaken, that his consciousness had merely entered an altered state, and that he had been feeling very tired. During the conversation Da'an reveals that Kryss was once the main diet of the Taelons (before they evolved), and tells Liam that he was conducting an experiment with the Kryss. Liam is not convinced by Da'an's words and Da'an speaks again of his indulgence in Kryss, describing it as an experiment gone terribly wrong. Liam tells Da'an that Dr. Curzon has developed a synthetic form of Kryss without side affects or addictive properties. He also tells Da'an that Zo'or has ordered that the Taelons restrict themselves to the new synthetic form of Kryss and avoid the real Kryss. Liam tells Da'an that he must comply with Zo'or's decree and that if he does continue to use the real form of Kryss, it will kill him. Da'an asks Liam how humans manage to avoid the temptation of addictive substances, and Liam tells him that "some people exert their will" and that "others never do".

Renee returns to the space station, ostensibly to meet Federov for lunch. She enters Federov's secret compartment and places an alarm device in it, then leaves to meet Federov who is surprised to see her as they didn't actually have a luncheon date. Federov does not recall their luncheon date and Renee acts surprised, telling him that he had sent her a message containing the luncheon invitation. Sandoval is also present. He had also been summoned to the space station by a false message purporting to be from Federov, and he is speaking with Federov as Renee enters the chamber. A depressurization alarm (actually the device Renee had planted) goes off and both Federov and Sandoval leave, entering the closest secure area, which just happens to be Federov's secret compartment. Sandoval immediately sees the Kryss and a stack of gold bars which he recognizes as part of Zo'or's own gold shipment. Federov proposes a "mutually beneficial" arrangement" between himself and Sandoval.

On earth, Eva returns to her father's estate with Liam, to meet with her father and let him know that his dealings with the Taelons have been discovered. As they are speaking, security arrive to arrest Senator Gale.

At the Taelon embassy, Da'an is watching the video coverage of Senator Gale's surrender when he is interrupted by Sandoval, who is witheringly sarcastic about Dr. Curzon's development of a synthetic form of Kryss. He offers Da'an some of the real thing, no doubt taken from Federov's private compartment. Da'an refuses the offer of real Kryss initially, but it is obvious as the episode ends that he is very weak and is very tempted by Sandoval's offer.
