Siobhan Beckett is rock climbing in a cavern somewhere in Europe. She is suspended on a rope high above the floor of the cavern, the opening above her head. Below her on the floor of the cave, a waterfall plunges into a pool, then empties into an underground stream.
In Resistance Headquarters, Doors and Lili are standing in front of a computer monitor which displays the image of a human brain with a cyber viral implant (CVI), when Liam Kincaid enters. Lili is explaining to Doors that when Dr. Parks modified Siobhan's CVI at the time of Liam's birth, she removed samples of cerebral tissue from Siobhan' s brain in order to run simulations and examine the long term effects of the CVI on a human brain. Liam makes an acid comment about Dr. Parks having used Siobhan as a human guinea pig and Doors retorts that they have done so no more than the Taelons. Lili explains that Siobhan and Sandoval were two of the first humans to implanted with a CVI, and that Siobhan provided the Resistance with their first opportunity to study the effects of a CVI on the brain. Dr. Park's research has yielded some interesting and alarming results. While the CVI radically increases the brain's capacity to process information, it also imposes a motivational imperative which compels the host to be totally loyal to its Taelon masters. The Taelons have, however, underestimated the strength and resilience of the human will. The brains of those who have been implanted with CVIs are beginning to reject the motivational imperative which commands loyalty to the Taelons. Liam sums up the situation by saying that implanted humans are becoming more intelligent, but are now resisting the motivational imperative and control by the Taelons.
Doors reiterates one of his favorite themes, that the human spirit will not tolerate having its freedom of choice taken away. Doors, Lili and Da'an come to the conclusion that companion protectors like Siobhan and Sandoval are now serving the Taelons because they want to, and not because they're being programmed to. Doors is dismissive, denouncing the companion protectors as still being traitors. Liam thinks that the breakdown of the motivational imperative has provided the Resistance with an opening and that he can bring Siobhan over to the side of the Resistance.
FLASHBACK (1) Liam and Siobhan are sitting in the shuttle in "Atavus", en route to hunt for the Atavus (Da'an). Liam has been telling Siobhan about being abandoned at birth and Siobhan asks him what he would say to his mother if he could talk to her now. Liam says, "I love you." Siobhan asks him if he still feels this way, even knowing that his mother left him. He tells Siobhan that although it doesn't make any sense, there is a bond between him and his mother which cuts across everything else.
Liam says flatly that Siobhan is his mother. Lili chooses this moment to tell Liam that Siobhan is missing and cannot be located. Liam thinks that Siobhan simply needed to get away for a while since her CVI is no longer telling her how to think and she must be questioning everything. Lili has checked Siobhan's apartment and found nothing, but a neighbor saw Siobhan leaving with her climbing gear. Liam suddenly remembers that Siobhan is a master climber and that when she needs to clear her head, she goes to the caves. Doors wants to know when Liam and Siobhan got that close and Liam tells him sarcastically that it happened on the day he was born. Doors asks Liam if he is familiar with the incident in which Sandoval's CVI broke down and tells him the same thing is now happening to Siobhan. Siobhan's CVI has broken down completely and has infiltrated her brain; the process is well advanced and it will not be possible to save her. The stricken Liam asks Lili how long Siobhan has, and Lili tells him that Siobhan has twenty four hours at most.
In the cave, Beckett secures her climbing rope and continues her descent, but she is having difficulty in maintaining her equilibrium and her grip; blood is beginning to flow from her ear at the point where her CVI is located. Suddenly she loses her hold on the rope and plummets down into the cave. The rope breaks her fall for a moment and she is suspended several feet above the floor of the cave, but then the safety gives way and she falls the rest of the way to the floor of the cave, unconscious.
In her unconscious state, Siobhan hears a voice saying that she has been charged by the people with having committed crimes against humanity, including kidnapping, treason, and murder. Unable to move, she looks up and sees Da'an standing on a stone ledge above her. The voice continues, saying that if Siobhan is found guilty as charged, she will be sentenced to die alone, and that her family line will die with her. If she is found innocent, she will be given a second chance. The trial begins.
A familiar figure steps forward and identifies himself as "Jonathan Doors, for the People". Doors states that the people believe that Siobhan Beckett is guilty of the crimes as charged. During the trial they will prove beyond a doubt that Lt. Beckett willingly turned her back on humanity, serving the Taelons faithfully and vigorously recruiting other people into the service of the Taelons to work against humanity. Doors proposes to begin by examining the Taelon propaganda which seduced Lt. Beckett in the first place.
FLASHBACK (2) The camera moves focuses on the waterfall in the cave, then moves to a scene in the first episode of the first season. Da'an is shown making a speech on how the Taelons are going to help humanity.
Doors states that Lt. Beckett never questioned the pronouncements of the Taelons, that on the contrary, she helped to perpetuate these lies. The people will prove that even in the face of mounting evidence against Taelon benevolence, the accused never once wavered in her blind support of the Taelons, and when presented with the opportunity to be implanted with a CVI, Lt. Beckett willingly gave up her free will to serve the Taelons.
FLASHBACK (3) Siobhan Beckett is shown being implanted with her CVI by Dr. Belman. (Actually this scene was spliced together from existing footage as no scene of Siobhan actually being implanted was ever shown in an episode.)
A second figure steps forward, Liam dressed in the uniform of a senior officer of the U.S. Rangers. He identifies himself as "Major Liam Kincaid, for the Defense". Beckett, who lies motionless on the floor of cave watches him. Liam tells the Court that virtually the whole planet welcomed the Taelon arrival on Earth in the sincere belief that an alien race could only come in peace, and that Siobhan was no exception. He crouches and removes the rope from Siobhan's climbing harness, saying that as a soldier, the most effective way for Lt. Beckett to manifest her support of the Taelons was in a military capacity, so she became a Companion Protector. Like all soldiers, she had been trained never to question orders. In her world, the chain of command was absolute and those facts are not in dispute. There is, however, a story behind the facts which must be told.
FLASHBACK (4) This is a scene from the episode called "Strandhill". Lili makes a remark to Siobhan about the great shape Beckett's troops are in. Siobhan names her troops as "the Belfast Militia, Anti-Terrorism Unit and says that after the Companions came and helped them form the United Republic of Ireland, there was no more IRA to fight. Lili asks if that is why the Companions chose Siobhan to serve them, because of her anti-terrorist expertise?. Siobhan replies that the Companions knew she was willing to die for a cause she believed in, or to kill for one.
Liam continues, saying that Lt. Beckett agreed to be implanted with the CVI because she is a professional soldier, and when on a mission seeks to eliminate all doubt from her mind, because doubt leads to fear, hesitation, mistakes and ultimately death. At the time of her implantation, Lt. Beckett simply embraced the opportunity to be the best soldier she could be. Da'an, in the role of judge, says that opening statements are complete, and that the Court will proceed with the presentation of witnesses.
Doors begins by saying that the accused is charged with actively recruiting other human beings in the service of the Taelons, in spite of her knowledge of Taelon crimes against humanity. He asks the first witness, Captain Lili Marquette, if she has any facts to offer in the case against Lt. Beckett. Lili tells the Court that she became acquainted with the accused when she was sent to Strandhill, Ireland to search for the tomb of an ancient Taelon named Ma'el. During the course of her investigation and later, Lt. Beckett aggressively tried to persuade Lili to become a companion agent.
FLASHBACK (5) Scenes are shown from the episodes titled "The Secret of Strandhill" and "The Joining" in which Siobhan tries to persuade Lili to become a companion agent.
Doors asks Lili if she agreed to become a companion agent. Lili angrily tells the Court that Siobhan refused to accept the fact that she (Lili) was not interested in a position as a companion agent and pursued her with a vengeance. Siobhan murmurs weakly that she tried to stop Lili, not to destroy her. Lili bends down and berates her, accusing her of entrapment. Beckett replies that Lili was working against the companions. Da'an rules that the witness (Lili) is out of order and must return to the stand at once. When Lili and Siobhan continue to argue, Da'an tells Doors that he must instruct Lili to return to her place immediately or she will be found in contempt of Court. Lili does as she is instructed and Doors says, "People's Exhibit No. 3, your Honor."
FLASHBACK (6) This is the scene from "The Joining" in which Siobhan tells Sandoval that she suspects Lili is a member of the Resistance.
Doors continues his questioning of Lili, asking her if she was aware that Da'an is the only member of the Synod to be openly sympathetic to humanity. Lili says that all companion protectors are aware of Da'an's position. Doors then refers to the incident in "Atavus" in which Siobhan attempted to kill Da'an, using excessive force when it was not necessary. Lili describes the hunt for the Atavus (Da'an), telling the Court how she located the Atavus and was trying to reason with it when Siobhan entered and fired her skrill, although the Atavus posed no threat at the time.
FLASHBACK (7) This is the scene in Atavus which Lili has just described to the Court in which Lili has located the Atavus and is attempting to reason with it when Siobhan bursts onto the scene and begins firing her skrill.
Siobhan defends herself saying weakly that Da'an had already killed two innocent people at that point and she ...... Da'an interrupts saying that he will not warn Siobhan again and that if she indulges in another outburst, he will find her guilty as charged.
Liam begins his cross examination of Lili, asking her if when Lt. Beckett offered to help her become a companion agent, she indicated that she was helping Lili because she (Siobhan) supported the Taelon agenda. Lili's sullen reply is that Siobhan's support of the Taelons was implicit in the offer to help her (Lili) become a companion agent. Liam corrects Lili, telling her that he is not asking what was implied, but what was stated. Lili is forced to admit that Siobhan did not state her support for the Taelons. Liam asks if it is possible that Lt. Beckett offered her backing simply because she respected Lili and wanted to help her advance her career. Lili is forced to admit it is possible.
Liam asks Lili if she ever questioned an order from a superior officer during her time in the Marines. Lili replies that she did, but never openly, and that she has never disobeyed an order. Liam asks if Lili if she would have refused to follow orders to track down or kill suspected Liberation members or the Atavus on sight, if she had been a companion agent. Lili says that she would not, but that Siobhan chose to become a companion agent and knew what she was signing up for. Liam asks what agenda Siobhan knew she was signing up for. It is Lili's opinion that Siobhan knew she was signing up to defend the Taelons and their plot to enslave humanity. Liam points out that Siobhan signed up three years ago at a time when no one, Jonathan Doors, Lili or anyone else on the planet knew that the Taelons had a hidden agenda. When Lili says that the Taelons have been manipulating humanity since they arrived, Liam accuses her of avoiding his question about whether Siobhan could have known about the Taelon hidden agenda when she signed up. He withdraws his question and asks Lili if she was aware that the Taelons had a hidden agenda when they first arrived on the planet. Lili reluctantly admits that she did not.
At Resistance Headquarters, Augur and Liam are trying to locate Beckett, using Augur's computer and Siobhan's climbing logs. Liam is desperate to find Siobhan before Sandoval because it is the only chance he will ever have to tell Siobhan that he is her son. Augur tells Liam that if he does tell Siobhan she will die; Liam replies that Siobhan is dying anyway. They browse through her climbing logs trying to determine where she might have gone. Augur finds a note about a cave in the Austrian Alps which has an unusually high concentration of ferrous oxide in the surrounding geological strata. This makes the cave very resistant to scanning devices, and would also make it a perfect place for Siobhan to go if she did not wish to be found.
Doors is examining Sandoval and asks him if he ever had any doubts about Siobhan's commitment to the Taelons. Sandoval tells the Court that Siobhan believed wholeheartedly in the Taelon agenda, and that her actions support his conclusions. Doors inquires if Siobhan used any and all means necessary, including illegal activities, to achieve the goals set for her by the Taelons. Sandoval agrees, saying that Siobhan knew they were at war and relied on her experience with terrorists to deal with anti-Companion sympathizers.
FLASHBACK (8) The scene from "The Secret of Strandhill" in which Siobhan and her team enter an Irish pub and Siobhan fires her skrill at a patron to get everyone's attention.
Liam questions Sandoval about the ability of companion agents to demonstrate emotion. Sandoval replies that the sole priority of companion agents is to protect the Taelons and that there is no room for human emotions in their endeavors. Liam's next question to Sandoval is rhetorical: he asks Sandoval if it would be an anomaly for a companion agent to show the emotional side of her human nature. Sandoval concurs. When Liam asks Sandoval if Siobhan ever showed him her emotional side, Sandoval attempts to evade the question by saying that such things are a matter of interpretation.
FLASHBACK (9) The scene from The Joining" in Siobhan is talking with Sandoval and trying to find out why he does not respond to her physical overtures.
Liam tells Sandoval that he interprets Siobhan's behavior as indicating that she was romantically interested in him and did not hesitate to make him aware of it. He asks if Sandoval agrees and Sandoval says that he does. Again, Liam asks Sandoval if Siobhan's behavior was inappropriate and inconsistent for a companion agent, and Sandoval agrees. Liam's last question to Sandoval concerns a possible explanation for Siobhan's behavior, that she never fully relinquished her human emotions. Sandoval says that it is possible.
Doors calls his next witness to the stand, Siobhan's mother, and asks her to tell the Court about her daughter. When she hears her mother's name, Siobhan painfully sits up. Mrs. Beckett tells the Court that Siobhan was the best daughter one could ever have hoped for, smart, beautiful and committed to her family. Doors asks what changed things, and Mrs. Beckett replies sadly that once Siobhan started her work for the Taelons, she thought of nothing else.
Doors asks if it would be true to say that Siobhan placed the welfare of the Taelons above everything else, including family, friends and other relationships. Mrs. Beckett replies that it is true, but that it was not Siobhan's fault, that she had lost her way. Beckett's expression as she gazes up at her mother is one of supreme sadness.
Liam gently cross examines Mrs. Beckett, who is his grandmother. He asks her if she has any other children and Mrs. Beckett replies that Siobhan was her only child, that she and her husband wanted a large family, but were only able to have Siobhan. Siobhan smiles up at her mother as Mrs. Beckett tells the Court that Siobhan had always meant to make things up to her parents by having ten children. Liam asks her to tell him more. Mrs. Beckett tells the Court that having children was the most important thing in Siobhan's life, and that she was determined to raise her children in a United Ireland. It was her desire for a United Ireland which would be a safe place in which to raise her children, which led to her intense involvement in the Irish Anti-Terrorist Unit. Liam asks Mrs. Beckett if Siobhan credited the Taelons with bringing peace to Ireland. Mrs. Beckett says that she did, but that the whole world did and as a result, Siobhan felt it was her duty to serve the Taelons. Mrs. Beckett looks tearfully at Siobhan and says, "If only we had known what they would turn her into." Siobhan, also in tears, lies down again.
On the mother ship Sandoval is supervising the search for Siobhan. Zo'or petulantly says that Siobhan's actions are inconceivable because her CVI compels her to act in the best interests of the Taelons and yet she has disappeared without a trace. He asks Sandoval for an explanation for Siobhan's behavior, and Sandoval's terse reply is that until he finds Siobhan and speaks with her he has no explanation for Zo'or. Zo'or reveals that Taelon scientists believe that the motivational imperative function of the CVI may be breaking down in some of the implants, and that those implants are no longer be programmed to be loyal to the Taelons. Sandoval believes it is irrelevant since those agents serving as companion protectors do so because they are already committed to the Taelons. Zo'or admits the possibility but says that CVIs are a form of insurance. He asks Sandoval if his CVI is functioning. Sandoval is silent for an instant and answers that it is functioning perfectly. Zo'or inquires about Siobhan's CVI and Sandoval hedges by saying that to the best of his knowledge, Siobhan wasn't experiencing any problems. Zo'or muses aloud that if the Taelon scientists are correct, it would explain Siobhan's actions, that if she now possesses the ability to second guess her loyalties, that may be what she is doing. Sandoval asks what will happen if that is the case. Zo'or replies that Siobhan has extensive knowledge of Taelon activities, that she poses a significant risk to the Taelons and that she would have to be eliminated.
Da'an asks Liam to call his first witness. Liam tells the Court that his only witness is Siobhan herself. As the real Siobhan lies there on the floor of the cave, a second Siobhan steps forward dressed in an Irish military uniform. Liam asks her to describe her activities before becoming a companion agent. She tells him that she was a member of the Anti-Terrorist Unit in the Irish Army. He inquires about her mission and she replies that her mission was to use any and all means available to prevent terrorist attacks on the citizens of Ireland. Liam asks Siobhan if she ever killed anyone in the course of her service with the unit and she replies with a terse "Yes". He asks her if she ever used illegal methods to ferret out terrorists and bring them to justice. She replies that terrorists tended not to honor the rules of engagement and that the Ant-Terrorist Unit "fought fire with fire". Liam asks if her superiors were aware of her activities and if she considers her career successful. She tells him that her superiors were well aware of her movements, that she was decorated on numerous occasions and that her rate of promotion was the highest in her unit. Liam asks her to confirm that she was rewarded for killing terrorists and for using any available means, legal or otherwise to do so. Siobhan tells him to examine her record, that she was promoted because she achieved results, and that is why she was recruited to become a companion agent.
Liam inquires about Siobhan's duty as a companion agent. She tells him that her duties were essentially the same as they had been in the anti-terrorist unit, to protect the Taelons and the humans working with them from terrorist attacks by the Liberation movement, using the same methods she had used in the military. Siobhan goes on to say that her leeway was much broader as a companion agent, that the Companions had instructed her to kill anyone she reasonably believed to be working against them, and that civil liberties were irrelevant when one was dealing with the Liberation movement. Liam asks Siobhan if she embraced this philosophy. Siobhan hesitates for a moment and answers that she was fighting to protect the Taelons, the beings who had brought peace, not only to Ireland, but to most of the world. Everything in her experience had told her that she was acting in the world's best interests by joining with the Taelons and ensuring their safety at all costs.
Liam asks if, in spite of the positive reinforcements, Siobhan has ever questioned the morality of her actions as a companion agent. Siobhan tells the Court that as a soldier, she was trained to fight any instincts to question authority, but that she did have doubts, because as a soldier in Ireland fighting terrorists, she could justify almost any action with the idea that she was protecting innocent children from random acts of violence. When the Companions came and brought peace to Ireland, out of gratitude she committed herself to them in the furtherance of peace, but as time went on and she became more involved in Companion operations, she realized that her duties were no longer as simple as protecting her people from killers. She continued to serve the Taelons because she was a soldier and she followed orders. Most of the people on Earth believed that the Companions were needed, and she viewed her doubts of them as weaknesses, but could not escape those doubts. Then a select group of companion agents were told about the CVI, a sophisticated piece of Taelon technology which would greatly increase the capacity of the human brain. Siobhan agreed to be implanted with a CVI because the offer was an honor reserved only for the most capable of companion agents. The implantation worked flawlessly, dramatically increasing her mental capacity and changing her prime motivation simply to serving the Taelons. She also received a skrill.
Liam asks Siobhan if her CVI is still working flawlessly, and Doors objects, saying that Siobhan's present state of mind has no bearing on the case. Liam disagrees saying that the defence intends to show that Siobhan has lost her compulsion to serve the Taelons and that in retrospect, if she had been acting under her own free will, she would not have been a party to Taelon actions against humanity. Liam and Doors argue, Doors saying that the CVI does not excuse the crimes against the people which Siobhan admits committing. When Liam has finished speaking, Doors says, "and if pigs had wings, they could fly." Da'an asks both Doors and Liam to approach the bench. He tells them that if the Court will not tolerate bickering between witnesses, it certainly will not tolerate bickering from counsel. Doors does not like Liam's use of "what if" scenarios to prejudice the case. Da'an tells Doors that he, and he alone, will decide what is prejudicial and asks the two counselors to withdraw from the bench. He rules in favor of the prosecution in the matter of its objection and tells Liam to continue examining his witness. Liam has no further questions.
In his cross examination, Doors proposes to lead the witness (Siobhan) to make a point and is permitted to do so on the grounds that it is relevant to the case. Doors asks Beckett, "Lt. Beckett, if I was to say that mothers are to sons, as fathers are to blank, could you fill in that blank?" Siobhan replies, "Daughters." Doors says, "Now, let's try a more difficult one. Eyeglasses are to watches, as fertilizer is to... what? No? Let me give you a little hint. Does the name Khmer Rouge ring a bell?" Liam, objects, realizing where Doors' words are leading, but Doors continues , "Or how about the mass murderer Pol Pot?" Liam protests that the prosecution's questioning is totally out of line, inflammatory and irrelevant. Doors replies that the line of argument is paramount to the People's case, and that if he (Da'an) will allow a little leeway, Doors will prove his point. Da'an gives Doors permission to proceed. Doors continues, saying, "Pol Pot was the leader of the Khmer Rouge party in the late 20th century, the landscape artist who sewed the killing fields of Cambodia, Pol Pot, who ordered his obedient soldiers to kill every man, woman, and child who wore a watch, or glasses, the telltale signs of perceived intelligence, the dreaded enemy of progress, the seed from which all insurrection grows and every despot's greatest fear, which is how three million people came to be murdered before this bloodshed was over." Liam says that it is ridiculous to compare Siobhan to such an obviously evil man. Doors asks acidly if counsel would prefer comparison to the SS, the KGB, or Mussolini's Black Shirts, good soldiers, one and all. Liam prefers that the prosecution explain its line of questioning or move on. Doors tells the Court triumphantly that it is sixty years too late; the allies beat him to it at a place called Nuremberg where it was ruled that crimes against humanity could not be disavowed under the guise of following orders.
Liam points out that those tried at Nuremberg were the main architects of the Third Reich, and were acting in free will and not from some programmed imperative. These arguments between Liam and Doors profoundly disturb Siobhan who is shaking uncontrollably and in tears. Doors says that Siobhan's crimes are even more heinous, because unlike her Nazi counterparts, she chose to blind herself to the truth by giving up her free will. He begins to walk toward her battering her with the words, "free will, that precious commodity for which millions of brave men and women have shed their blood since the dawn of time, from the streets of ancient Athens, to the steps of Tsarist Russia, to the concrete barricades of Berlin, to the Killing Fields of Cambodia, Sarajevo, Algeria, Afghanistan ......". Siobhan begs him to stop and finally screams at him. On the floor of the cave, the real Siobhan appears to be unconscious, a pool of blood forming beneath her head. On the stand, the other Beckett covers her ears to block out Doors' words, but when she removes her hands, they are bloody. Sensing that Siobhan's time is short, Da'an tells Doors that they will proceed with the closing arguments.
Doors sums up the case for the People by saying: "Free will, your honor, the spring from which human conscience flows, that intangible force that allowed a mere foot soldier in Vietnam to stop the killings at Mai Lai. It allowed King Christian of Denmark to defy the Nazis and wear a Jewish star; it is a two-edged sword, leaving the pure of heart without guilt, and the heavy of heart without excuse; for without free will, there can be no conscience, no law, no order, and certainly no justice. I, therefore, ask you to find for the prosecution, and convict Siobhan Beckett for the crimes as charged." As Da'an gestures to Liam to begin his summation, Doors interjects and asks to add a final point to his summation. He says, "Watches are to eyeglasses, as fertilizer is to killing fields."
Liam makes his summation saying, "Your honor, I have only three words in defence of Lt. Beckett. Duty, honor, and country, and with them, I summon the fallen heroes of all the nations which have sacrificed their youth in battle. If you would condemn Lt. Beckett for giving up her free will, then you must condemn all of those people along side her. For, if Lt. Beckett is guilty of anything, it is looking to the stars for a better world."
Da'an asks Siobhan is she has anything to say before the Court announces its verdict, and Siobhan starts to say, "If only....." then looks at her mother and says, "Turn all the ifs into gold, and we'd all be millionaires. Isn't that right, mother?" She tells Da'an that she has nothing to add. Da'an tells her that the Court has no option but to find her guilty as charged, and to sentence her to death. Siobhan bows her head as Da'an concludes by saying, "What you did, we recognize you did with an open heart, giving up your free will for what you believed to be the betterment of mankind, and though we cannot condone your crimes against humanity, we can draw on one of your species' most splendid qualities in altering this verdict, which is best exemplified by the words, 'To err is human, to forgive, divine." This Court is hereby adjourned."
FLASHBACK (10) This is the scene from the beginning of this episode in which Beckett plummets to the floor of the cave.
Return to the present moment......
Liam descends to the floor of the cave and takes Siobhan into his arms just as she drifts back into consciousness, a pool of blood beneath her ear. Her voice is almost inaudible as she tells him that she knew he would come, that he defended her and believed in her, and that she knows she can trust him now. Liam asks her what she means, and she says that it doesn't matter, that she has made a lot of mistakes and that she had to account for them. She tells Liam that the motivational imperative in her CVI is gone and that she is finally free to think for herself. Liam asks her gently what she is thinking, and she tells him that he must fight the Taelons, that they must not allow the Taelons to turn the earth into a killing field. Liam fervently promises her that he will, but as he does, he puts his hand to the side of her head and discovers the blood pouring from her ear. He is close to tears as he asks her if she can feel it, and she tells him that her CVI is breaking down. He brokenly tells Siobhan that the CVI can't be removed and there is no time. As he holds Siobhan in his arms, she begins to cry, telling Liam that she is not crying for herself, but for the child she will never have. Liam closes his eyes and presses his palm against Siobhan's, finally able to bond with her and share the fact that he is her son. She stops crying and looks up at him saying peacefully, "I understand now. We didn't have our time together here on earth, but you were brought to me when I needed you the most. If you ever lose your way, my son, look to the heavens, and I'll be shining a star for you." She closes her eyes and dies. The weeping Liam closes her eyes and sits on the floor of the cavern, rocking Siobhan gently back and forth, as he says, "Guide my soul until morning." He looks and sees Sandoval standing above him just inside the entrance of the cave with an expression of tenderness.
